Directors Statement: I was profoundly drawn to Caravaggio's story, as my artistic mission is to challenge the patriarchal hetero-normative Eurocentric canon. Caravaggio's life serves as a poignant reminder that even this brilliant artist paid the ultimate price for his unflinching honesty.
By employing the film's experimental form, I wanted to create a subjective perspective to show Caravaggio's destructive internalized homophobia. In framing his tragic final day, we are alongside him. In homage to his art, I illuminated the moment of his heartbreak with chiaroscuro. I also filmed my story's transitions through the lens of color by actually placing the camera under a bucket of vibrant pigment.
